About Us

The Piedmont Soaring Society was founded by five soaring pilots and organized in October 1999 under an old oak tree located on the Bahnson Family Farm in Farmington, North Carolina. The Gliderport is officially known on the aeronautical charts as 43NC. Our mission is to provide a location for members and soaring enthusiast to enjoy the sport of soaring. As a club we provide several benefits including flight equipment, tows with the membership owned Piper Pawnee as well as flight instruction. Our club’s Certified Flight Instructors (CFI) do not charge members for their time. In addition we offer for a minimal fee, introductory flights for those persons interested in soaring and joining our club. All introductory flights are conducted by a Federal Aviation Administration licensed Commercial pilot.

Visiting soaring pilots are welcome and services are available to launch their own gliders or use club ships. We require a field check out, review of club operations and a completed daily membership application prior to flying.

Our Club always welcomes visitors! You can see personally our facilities and watch the soaring prior to taking your first flight. Upon arrival, please check in with the operations/duty person who will assist you and provide information that will ensure your visit is pleasurable and safe. See the checklist page for more information. We look forward to meeting and flying with you.
